Recent posts, correlating the failed coup of Adolph Hitler in 1923, to America’s current divided landscape; wanted to share a “not so small piece” of my family’s history. Almost two decades after Hitler’s failed coup (1939) my grandmother, Marianne was sent from her home in Prague, Czechoslovakia to London, England as refuge. Her sister Ruth, came to the USA later (a rough story for different day). A man, named Nicholas Winton organized a humanitarian effort that history would come to know as the “Kinder Transport.” Sir Nicholas Winton saved 669 children in total, including my grandma. Without him, I would not exist today.

In 1942, my grand grandparents were sent to Terezan concentration camp, prior their final destination of Izbica death camp in 1944. We do not know how and when exactly they were killed. My great grandparents and at least 44, (yes, at least 44) of my family were exterminated by the Nazis.

My cousin has been very active regarding our family’s lineage. The picture you see is a letter addressed to my great grandfather, George Schorsch. Informing him that his property was being seized / sold and a percentage of the sales were going directly to the Reich Protectorate’s (the literal translation) bank account.

I would like to believe the US is better than this, and the majority of her people are. It’s encouraging so see Democrats and some Republicans come together on the issue of Trump’s removal from office. The US Armed Forces and joint Chiefs of Staff issued a press release condemning the violence and backing Biden’s peaceful transition of power. Sharing this piece of my family’s history saddens me, but I do so in the hope people understand this… Trump and his devout followers are a threat to democracy.

So… In summary, we’ve watched chaos unfold that we never thought possible in the US and “we the people” deserve justice. It is important anyone associated with incitement of violence and insurrection be penalized and prosecuted to the full extent of the law, including #45.
